June Wine Subscription: Three Bold Wines, One Wild Month. You In?

We had a great start to May with the sun shining, dry ground, tractors moving like they owned the place. Then the rain came… and just kept coming.

Right now, we’re in a bit of a holding pattern.

Too wet to work the soil and too cool to call it summer. This is when the vineyard teaches you patience. You watch the shoots shoot, the vines go full drama queen with all that extra vigour, and you hope there is no humidity to invite anything funky.

June's box is a good one (and it's available now at the Shed for pickup, open 12pm-5pm daily!). A little experimental, a little nostalgic, and a lot of what MW’s all about: letting the vineyard speak, trying something new, and staying honest about what Niagara can do.

Let’s get into it.

🐚 Seashell – 50% Pinot Noir, 50% Chardonnay, 100% One-of-a-Kind

We only made it once. Haven’t repeated it. But people have kept asking about it. So, here it is: resurrected for subscribers only.

What makes it cool? It drinks like a white Burgundy had a fling with a Champagne base wine. It has high acidity from the Chardonnay and weight from the Pinot. And while it is just 11% alcohol, it feels full. Think crushed shell minerality meets subtle red fruit and cream.

What to eat with it? Lobster and butter. Pasta with a white sauce. Or a Flammekueche, if you’re feeling fancy.

🍇 2021 Cabernet Franc - Juicy, Ripe, and Raised Right

It comes from the St. David’s Bench, right behind Chateau des Charmes and across from Ravine. If you know, you know. If not, just know it’s a sweet spot for reds that need a little altitude and a lot of sun.

What’s in the bottle? 13.5% alcohol with no leafy notes, just red currant, dark cherry, and a bit of cocoa dust.

I pair it with lamb from my neighbour Moe. Walk two doors down, knock, and you’ll probably leave with dinner.

🪨 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon - Gravel, Bark, and a Whole Lotta Grip

It’s sitting at 15% alcohol but wears it well. If you’re drinking it now, give it a decant. 20 minutes goes a long way.

Recap: Why These Wines?

Because they tell a story about timing, place, and letting the wine decide what it wants to be.

The Seashell? A one-time blend that just worked, and still does. High-acid and textured, with a name that says it all.

The Franc? Proof that with the right site and the right vintage, Cab Franc can be plush, smooth, and ready to impress.

And the Cab Sauv? A love letter to restraint in a hot year. Grown in a cool spot, made with an old-world lens, and built to go the distance.
