Summer is far from over and July brought us blazing skies and bone-dry soil.
Perfect.
This is exactly the kind of weather that keeps Marty whistling on the tractor.
Here are a few things happening on our end!
🌿In the Vineyard: Deep Roots, Clean Fruit
July broughtdry heat, slow growth.
This means a few things. Firstly, the the grass didn’t grow much. Same with the weeds.
And the vines? They went underground.
With no surface water, they sent their roots deep tapping into the good stuff that addscharacter and resilience. This is the kind of vineyard focus that only happens when the vines stop rushing and start digging deep.
We leaned into that by doing major leaf removal, to open the canopy and get air and light into the clusters.
Keeping up with fruit thinning and dropping the fluff, focusing the energy.
And finally prepping for bunch closure, when the window closes on any fruit flaws.
🍷In the Cellar: Bottled and Coming Your Way
We bottled five new wines in July and three of them are already out in the wild!
2023 Petit Verdot
This is MW Cellar'sfirstPetit Verdot! Bright, floral, peppery, and just a little wild. Violets and cherry up front, forest floor and tobacco on the finish.
A fan favourite over the last year. Mostly Cab Franc with a splash of Merlot. Strawberry jam, red cherry, cedar and spice. Smooth, juicy, and made for second pours.
2024 Syrah
St. David’s fruit. One American oak puncheon. Bottled by gravity, filtered lightly. Cracked pepper, blackberry, cardamom, and wild herbs.
*Note that we now only have a very limited of the 2022 Cabernet left now. Available only at the Shed! After that? It’s gone.
